When Cancer Takes Your Hair: Finding a Piece of Yourself Again

Hair can feel like such a small thing until it is suddenly gone. For one of our clients, losing her hair during cancer treatment was about more than looking different. It felt like a familiar piece of herself was missing.

She was already navigating appointments, treatments, uncertainty, and changes she never asked for. Then came another change. The hair she had seen in the mirror every morning for years was gone.

She did not necessarily feel like she had lost her confidence. She felt like she had lost a piece of herself.

Her hair had been part of how she recognized herself. The color. The cut. The way it framed her face. The familiar woman looking back at her.

When she came to Glam.Is.On, our goal was never to give her a completely new look.

It was to help her look in the mirror and recognize herself again.

01 • Understanding Hair Loss

Chemotherapy Hair Loss Can Feel Deeply Personal

Hair loss is one of the most visible changes that can happen during cancer treatment.

Many chemotherapy medications target rapidly dividing cells. Because hair follicle cells also divide quickly, certain treatments can lead to thinning or partial or complete hair loss.

Not every chemotherapy treatment causes the same amount of hair loss. However, for many women, losing their hair becomes an emotional part of an already difficult journey.

Cancer can change so much in such a short amount of time. Your schedule changes. Your body changes. Your routines change.

Suddenly, something as simple as getting ready in the morning can feel completely different.

While hair may seem cosmetic to someone looking in from the outside, it can represent so much more to the woman experiencing the loss.

Hair can be part of your identity.
Hair can be part of your femininity.
Hair can be part of how you have always recognized yourself.

That is why creating a custom wig for a woman experiencing cancer-related hair loss is about much more than simply covering the scalp.

It starts with listening.

02 • Designed Around Her

Creating a Custom Wig From the Hair She Remembers

When our client came to us, she did not want to look like someone else.

She wanted to look like herself before she lost her hair.

That became our reference point.

Photos of her natural hair allowed Brendon Christensen to study the details that made her hair uniquely hers. The color. The tone. The dimension. The length. The haircut. The shape. The way it framed her face.

A custom wig is not simply selected from a box and placed on someone's head. It is personalized around the individual woman who will be wearing it.

Every Detail Had a Purpose

For this client, Brendon custom colored the wig to match her natural hair color as closely as possible. The cut and style were then personalized to recreate the way she wore her hair before cancer treatment.

The goal was not to create a new version of her. It was to create hair that felt recognizable, personal, and true to her.

The Question Behind the Process
“Can you help me feel like this woman again?”
03 • The Artistry

The Art and Emotion Behind a Custom Medical Wig

Hair color and haircutting have always been an art. But creating hair for someone experiencing medical hair loss carries a different kind of emotion.

You are not simply deciding whether the layers should be shorter or whether the color should be warmer.

You are working from memories.

Custom Color, Cut, Shape, and Style

Maybe it is the hairstyle she wore every day to work. Maybe it is how her hair looked in family photographs.

Maybe it is the hair her husband and children have seen for years.

Or maybe it is simply the version of herself she recognizes most.

We study those details carefully. The color is customized. The haircut is customized. The shape around the face is customized. The styling is customized.

Throughout the process, the woman wearing the wig is never treated like just another appointment.

The goal is for the finished result to feel natural, familiar, and personal.

04 • Fitting + Education

Learning How to Apply and Wear a Custom Wig

Creating the wig is only one part of the experience.

Knowing how to wear it comfortably at home is just as important.

When the custom wig is ready, Brendon personally walks the client through the application process step by step.

As she puts the wig on the client, she explains what she is doing, why she is doing it, and how the client can recreate the process at home.

Every Client Is Taught How To:

  • Position the wig correctly
  • Secure it comfortably
  • Adjust the fit
  • Style and maintain the hair
  • Use the proper tools and supplies
  • Apply it in multiple ways based on her needs

Support Beyond the Appointment

We provide the proper tools and supplies needed to apply and secure the wig in multiple ways.

Some women want to be able to do everything completely on their own. Others may have a spouse, daughter, friend, or family member who will help them.

Either way, we want every client to leave feeling prepared.

A beautiful custom wig should not sit unused at home because someone feels intimidated or unsure about how to put it on.

Education is part of the experience.

05 • The Reveal

The Moment She Saw Herself Again

Then comes the moment we never get tired of witnessing.

The wig goes on. The hair is adjusted around her face. The final pieces fall into place.

And she looks in the mirror.

Why This Moment Matters

That moment is difficult to describe.

Sometimes there are smiles. Sometimes there are tears. Sometimes there is simply a quiet expression that says everything before a single word is spoken.

For this client, we were not trying to erase what she had been through. A wig cannot change a cancer diagnosis or make treatment disappear.

But it could return something cancer had temporarily taken from her.

Something familiar. Something feminine. Something that still felt like her.

Watching a client's face begin to glow when she recognizes herself again is one of the most meaningful parts of what we do.

Because sometimes hair really is more than hair.

Sometimes it is a memory of who you were before treatment. Sometimes it is a little piece of normalcy during a season that feels anything but normal.

And sometimes it is simply one small piece of yourself that you are ready to have back.
